Project
Beacon Broadband Inc. is a for profit subsidiary of Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative. CCEC has been serving our members with quality service and integrity for over 80 years. The same local company that has been your trusted utility partner will soon deliver cutting edge fiber-to-the-home technology, unlimited local and long-distance phone service, and streaming video service options.
CCEC is building a fiber-to-the-home broadband network to serve the Southern Oregon Coast. Many areas in CCEC’s service territory do not have high-speed internet service. About 20% of CCEC members are severely underserved and have no or limited access to high-speed internet except through satellite service or a cellular data plan which doesn't meet the needs in today’s technology-driven world. Beacon Broadband was created to solve this problem and close the urban/rural digital divide.
No. Beacon Broadband has been set up as a corporation (C-corp) owned solely by Coos-Curry Electric Cooperative. Beacon Broadband will be building a fiber-to-the-home network to provide internet, voice, and television service.
Beacon Broadband intends to provide internet, voice, & video service on the Southern Oregon Coast.
Areas include Harbor, Brookings, Gold Beach, Port Orford, Langlois, Agness, Fairview, Sumner, Powers, and more!
For the first time, members in many areas of our service territory along the Southern Oregon Coast and inland will be able to have access to high-speed internet at competitive prices. High-speed connectivity provides many benefits, including:
- Fastest download and upload speeds
- Multiple household users enjoying the internet simultaneously
- Easy access to streaming movies, television, and events through the internet
- Playing advanced video games online
- The ability for telecommuting, distance learning, and telemedicine
- Local employees, local service, local support.
Service
No. All of our services will be month-to-month. We will ask you to sign an internet services agreement that allows us to provide you service and a property access license that lets us build fiber to your house.
Our phone service will work the same as your existing service. Before installation, we will port your phone number to Beacon Broadband or provide a new one. During installation, we will connect our equipment to your existing phone or in-home wiring, and you will be up and running. We recommend purchasing an 8-hour or 24-hour battery backup for continued voice services during power outages.
Unlimited local and long-distance telephone service will cost $15 per month if you have Beacon Broadband's internet service. If you want telephone service by itself, Beacon will charge an additional fiber access fee of $30 per month.
Beacon Broadband's television service offers the best of broadcast television coupled with the features of streaming television. With Beacon's television packages, you will be able to pause, rewind, record for later, and control your viewing experience like never before.
We will provide high-speed fiber-optic internet. Our internet plans range from 100Mbps to 1 Gbps and beyond. Our service is symmetrical – that is, you get the same speeds for uploads as you do for downloads.
No. Your price will remain the same as when you sign up for as long as you have our service. If you cancel service, and then come back to us later on, you’ll pay the price that we charge at that time which may be increased from what you paid originally.
No. We are a wholly owned subsidiary of Coos Curry Electric Cooperative. Ziply (previously Frontier Communications) and Spectrum (previously Charter) are completely separate companies, and we are not affiliated with them.
Fiber
This means that we will provide state of the art Internet delivery over optical fiber — directly from our switching equipment all the way to your home or business. This fiber delivery system supports and allows for a multitude of services including the fastest Internet possible with speeds of up to 1 Gigabit.
This fiber internet connection is 100x times faster than today’s average broadband service: 1 Gigabit (Gig) = 1,000 Mbps
• Download 100 photos in 3 seconds
• Download 100 songs in 3 seconds
• Download an HD movie in 7 seconds
Fiber-optic internet provides lower latency and higher speeds to keep you connected.
Other technologies include:
- DSL – Short for digital subscriber line, uses the copper wiring from landline phone systems to deliver an internet signal. (3 – 115 Mbps).
- Cable Internet - Cable internet runs through a coaxial cable network (10-1000 Mbps).
- Satellite Internet Access – Provides high-speed internet by transmitting signals through satellites. However, data transmission is slowed significantly due to round trip latency. (Up to 506 Mbps).
Installation
For a standard installation, Beacon Broadband's installation technicians will bring a fiber drop cable from the fiber running past your home up to the side of your home. This cable will end at a small box on the side of your house. The install technician will then bring an indoor fiber into your house and connect it to the fiber modem (or ONT).
We have begun engineering and building the network. It will take us three or four years to get to every address.
A lot of factors determine where we will build first. One of those factors is how many people we will help with each piece of network construction we complete. You can help us know where interested subscribers are by pre-registering today.
The owner of the home or building will need to sign a permission form.
